CONNOQUENESSING TWP — A Bridgeville, Allegheny County, man was killed and two other people were injured in a three-vehicle crash Thursday morning in Connoquenessing Township.

The wreck occurred at 7:03 a.m. on Evans City Road near White Oak Drive.

Pennsylvania State Police said Jonathan D. Flickinger, 34, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Police said Flickinger was the driver of a 2017 Kia Optima that was heading east on Route 68 when his car was hit by a westbound vehicle driven by Kaleb D. Tanley, 20, of Middlebourne, W.Va. Police said Tanley's vehicle, which was not fully identified by police Thursday, crossed into oncoming traffic before the crash.

Tanley's vehicle then hit a 1999 Toyota Sienna driven by Michael E. Bowers, 56, of Renfrew.

Flickinger was pronounced dead Thursday morning at Butler Memorial Hospital. An autopsy was planned for Thursday afternoon. Butler County Deputy Coroner John Hanovich said Thursday he did not expect any results to be released until sometime Friday.

Tabitha Watterson of Butler, who said she came upon the scene following the crash, told the Eagle on Thursday that she helped provide basic first aid to Flickinger before rescue crews arrived.

Watterson, who said she is a medical assistant for a local doctor's office, was driving past the scene when she found Flickinger unconscious in his vehicle.

Watterson said she and another man were unable to open the Optima's locked doors, but were eventually able to get into the back of the car, and she checked Flickinger for a pulse. Watterson said Flickinger was in and out of consciousness and she held his head and comforted him until ambulance crews arrived.

“I just want to tell his family that he didn't suffer,” she said. “He didn't say anything and wasn't moaning or in pain. I comforted him until the ambulance crew arrived and he didn't look scared or in pain, but was floating in and out of consciousness.”

Tanley was taken to BMH by Butler EMS for apparent minor injuries. A report released Thursday by state police states that Bowers was also injured but was not transported from the scene by emergency responders.

One trooper at the scene said the accident was “practically a head-on collision,” and bystanders recounted being shaken by the violent collision.

“It had an awful bang,” said Richard Haniwalt, who originally thought a truck had hit something. The accident occurred in front of Haniwalt's house at 1081 Evans City Road.

“I heard this terrible bang,” said Mary Ann Hilliard, who said it was still pretty dark when the accident occurred. She called 911 and her husband, Bob, went out to the scene.

Evans City Road remained closed for several hours as the state police performed an accident reconstruction investigation. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Firefighters from Connoquenessing, Butler Township, Evans City and Prospect responded to the call.

Tanley was cited for summary not driving on road laned for traffic, according to the police report.
