SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The Slippery Rock School District will host a Special Education Night on Nov. 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The evening is being planned by Dr. Laura Green, Slippery Rock School District’s director of special services, as a way of helping the school community understand many of the processes associated with special education programs in the school district, according to a press release.

“This event is simply a means of communicating facts concerning special education to parents. The better-informed our parents are and the more we collaborate with them as a staff, the more positive experience we can provide our kids,” Green said in the release.

Planned as an evening of discussion and sharing, organizers intend to give participants knowledge of special education topics such as the student evaluation process, goals and objectives, transition services for post-high school, related services for special education students, the extended school year, and parent engagement.

Parents from neighboring districts are also invited to join. An expert guest panel will share their special education knowledge and answer questions following a presentation. The event will also include community agencies including the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Center for Community Resources, The Arc of Butler, and Slippery Rock University.

The Disability Options Network and the Center for Independent Living is co-sponsoring this event with the district.
