Concerns about heavy trucks going over local bridges were discussed at Monday’s Evans City Borough Council meeting.

President Lee Dyer is concerned that the town lacks the proper data to know how much weight these bridges can hold.

“We’re having some issues — in my opinion — with trucks going over these bridges,” he said. “I’ve seen cement trucks and other trucks going over the bridges. I’ve also seen commercial trucks.”

Many of the roads leading to the bridges prohibit commercial trucks, but some argue that they lack the proper signs and that the town needs more information from engineers before it can ban commercial trucks from the roads.

To pass such an ordinance, an engineer must inspect the road and agree that commercial trucks should be banned.

Council also is working to have an engineer inspect the bridges to see how much weight they can safely hold, said Dyer.

“We had a bridge cave in years ago,” he said. “It cost the town $25-$30,000. Today it’d be $50-$75-$100,000.”

Currently, trucks that weigh three tons or more are not permitted on the bridges in case of collapse.

In other news, the Evans City Water and Sewer Authority (WSA) has reached a tentative agreement with Callery borough to provide services.

The agreement is still waiting on the final signatures, but upon being finalized the agreement will mean the withdrawal of the WSA’s lawsuit against Callery borough.

The lawsuit has been ongoing for years as both parties dispute the amount of payments Callery makes to Evans City.

With the signing of this agreement, that lawsuit will be withdrawn and the issues resolved.

The council voted “no objection” to the deal, allowing it to proceed, and voted to approve the withdrawal of the lawsuit pending the final signatures.
