Butler police are seeking an unknown suspect who tried to rob a downtown pizza shop Saturday night.

The would-be masked robber left Domino's Pizza on South Main Street empty-handed about 8:30 p.m. after the manager refused to hand over money, police said.

The suspect is described as a white man who is believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. No one was injured.

The man walked into the shop with a brown scarf tied over his face. He wore a dark sweatshirt, black pants and a black beanie cap with a white skull emblem on it.

He also wore eyeglasses, which may have been part of his disguise.

“They looked like they were costume glasses,” said manager Duane Webster, “kind of like a Halloween costume thing.”

The suspect's get-up and demeanor were apparently anything but intimidating.

“He was talking in a subdued voice,” said Webster, a nearly 30-year Domino's employee who's been manager at the Butler store since 2014. “He looked like he was timid, just standing in the lobby.”

When he came in, he told a clerk, “Give me the register,” Webster recalled. But the clerk was on the telephone talking to a customer and she gestured to him that he had to wait.

The manager, who had been on the far side of the room, saw the scarf-clad man.

“I told him, 'You probably shouldn't come in here wearing a scarf, people will think you're going to rob them,'” Webster said.

The suspect replied, “Give me the cash register.”

Webster replied, “No.”

The suspect kept his right hand in his sweatshirt pocket but he displayed no weapon nor did he say he had one.

The reply to his demand for money possibly caught the wannabe robber by surprise.

“He stood there looking really confused,” Webster recalled, “like he wasn't expecting that answer.”

After a moment or so, the manager, who had already pressed the silent alarm, told the man to “get out of here.” Webster took a few steps toward the suspect, who retreated out the door and ran across the street.

He darted in front of a car in his getaway and was nearly struck. Webster chased after him but eventually stopped.

The suspect, police said, continued running west on Jefferson Street. He was last seen northbound on Jackson Street.

Police said they are waiting to view surveillance video from the attempted robbery.
