SLIPPERY ROCK — The Rock is still rolling.

For the second year in a row Slippery Rock University has set an enrollment record, the school announced last week. SRU has enrolled 8,895 students for the fall semester, an increase of 0.16 percent from last year, according to university officials.

The increase, which comes one year after the school set a record by enrolling 8,881 students for the 2016 fall semester, was again largely driven by graduate student enrollment, which was up 3.29 percent. The school also said it saw increases in full-time equivalency students and the number of credit hours students are enrolled to earn.

Amanda Yale, the university’s provost for student enrollment, credited additions to SRU’s curriculum, capital improvements to the school’s campus and new scholarship programs for the rising enrollment. She said the university and the SRU Foundation awarded more than $4.2 million in academic scholarships this year.

University officials said that SRU’s new freshman enrollment is up by 33 students, setting a record of 1,597 freshmen and eclipsing the previous record set in 2014. That contributed to a total fall undergraduate enrollment of 7,638 students.

The school set a record by enrolling 1,257 graduate students for the fall semester — an increase of 40 students from last year’s total.

The school’s campus also became more diverse, officials said. Overall the school saw increases in enrollment by students identifying as Asian, Hispanic, Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and other races.

Philip Way, the school’s interim president, called the enrollment gains a sign that the school’s message is reaching high school students during the college selection process.

“I think these numbers are further evidence that we don’t just talk about ‘experiencing the difference of a Rock Solid education,’” Way said.

“Rather, they prove that we walk the walk and if immersing oneself in a caring community of learners is what students are looking for, SRU is truly the best choice for doing so.”
