A Beaver County man, charged with causing a drunken wrong-way hit-and-run crash, was placed in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program in Butler County Court on Tuesday.

Joseph T. Burger, 36, of Baden was placed on 24 months' probation in the ARD program on charges of misdemeanor driving under the influence and recklessly endangering another person by Judge Timothy McCune.

He was also ordered to undergo a 60-day driver's license suspension, attend the litter pickup program and the victim impact panel and pay restitution.

Burger's attorney, Joseph Kecskemethy, told the court that his client has “not been in trouble with the law before,” and asked for Burger to be admitted into the program.

Burger was initially charged with misdemeanor DUI highest rate, two counts of reckless endangerment, one count of accidents involving damage to attended vehicles or property and summary traffic violations after an incident on Interstate 79 in Worth Township on May 14.

State police filed the charges after being called to a crash in the northbound lanes near exit 105.

Police said Burger had been driving an SUV southbound in the wrong lane when he hit the other vehicle that was getting off the interstate at the exit.

Police noticed a container of alcohol in the center console after stopping the SUV. They said Burger also reeked of alcohol and showed signs of being intoxicated.

A blood test later revealed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.267, police said, more than three times the legal limit.

He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail following arraignment.
