PORTERSVILLE — Firefighters responded to a garage fire late Monday afternoon in the borough.

Emergency services were called at 3:51 p.m. to 1251 Perry Highway, across the street from Cal's General Store.

Firefighters encountered “medium smoke conditions confined to the area of origin” as they brought in five trucks altogether from the Portersville-Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department and the assisting Prospect Borough Volunteer Fire Department, extinguishing the fire quickly, according to Portersville-Muddy Creek Township's Chief Timothy Saunders.

“The fire was brought under control a few minutes after our arrival,” Saunders said.

Saunders said the homeowner, William Shaw, was home at the time of the fire. He said Shaw called 911 and tried to contain the fire by his own means until firefighters arrived.

Saunders said the fire appears to have started and accelerated in a small wood pile near the rear of the garage, but details on how the fire started are undetermined at this time.

There were no injuries, and the extent of the damage is unknown, according to Saunders.

“He's still in there looking around at the damage,” Saunders said.
