BUTLER TWP — The 20th annual SeptemberFest on Sunday at Alameda Park promises good weather and a good time for area families.

Ashley Helmstaedter, program aquatic manager for Butler County Parks and Recreation, said the festival will see about 55 vendors, live entertainment, a petting zoo, bubble soccer and other family-oriented events between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Oddfellows Circle area of the park. The Butler Lions Club 5K will start at 9 a.m. in the lower section of Alameda Park. Registration is at 7:30 a.m.

Helmstaedter said admission and parking are free, and 4,000 to 5,000 people turn out to enjoy the festival each year.

New this year is bubble soccer, where players don large inflatable spheres and bump one another in hopes of scoring a goal. Bubble soccer is free and open to anyone who attends the festival.

Also new this year is the Grand Railroad, which is a small train ride for kids under 12. It will cost $2 per ride and will set up near Shelter 2.

The annual fishing tournament is a casualty of the nice weather this year, as it has been postponed until next weekend because the water in the pool is too hot for the fish.

Helmstaedter said there is no use putting ice and fresh water in the pool to cool it down.

“We tried that last year,” Helmstaedter said. “It didn't work.”

The fishing tourney will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Alameda pool. Prizes of gift cards and memberships to Alameda Waterpark will be given to those who catch fish with tags attached to their gills.

Other features of the SeptemberFest are a car cruise, crafters, pony rides and many other activities.

“It's a very family oriented activity in a clean, beautiful park,” Helmstaedter said. “It's just the perfect family atmosphere.”
