A Beaver County woman charged with giving her child an antidepressant without a prescription was paroled to house arrest in Butler County Court on Thursday.

Danielle L. Powell, 28, of Rochester was sentenced by Judge William Shaffer to six to 23½ months in Butler County Prison, and was immediately paroled with time served, to 30 days house arrest with electronic monitoring.

The house arrest was deferred for 30 days to make arrangements to transfer supervision to Beaver County.

Powell previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor endangering the welfare of children on Aug. 16. She was initially charged with felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and a felony endangering charge, which was later reduced to a misdemeanor and the drug charge dismissed as part of the plea.

Cranberry Township police said Powell gave her 10-year-old son an unknown dosage of trazodone during the night of Nov. 28, 2016.

The report was made by an anonymous tipster to ChildLine after being in contact with Powell, who told the tipster about the incident.

“Powell reportedly administered this narcotic as a method of calming John Doe after he was fighting with his siblings,” the report states.

Interviews with personnel at Rowan Elementary School revealed that the student arrived late to school on Nov. 29 and did not act normally.

“According to each of the four people interviewed, John Doe appeared tired, lethargic, completely zoned-out, unable to concentrate and unaware of his surroundings,” the report states.

The report further states that he told a medical professional at the school that his mother, Powell, “gives him a white pill at nighttime to sleep.”

Trazodone is a Class IV narcotic, not available without a prescription, used as an antidepressant medication to treat major depressive disorders — and not administered to people under the age of 18 without a doctor's approval.

The anonymous tipster informed police that Powell said she obtained the medication from a prescription issued to her boyfriend, according to the police report.

Powell's home on Route 19 was searched by police. They found a prescription bottle filled with 51 complete trazodone pills and six partial pills, according to authorities.

Powell was released on her own recognizance following arraignment.
