OAKLAND TWP — State police believe a 28-year-old woman with a history of drug use was alive when she was dumped along a road behind Oneida Valley dam.

Kayla A. Dunlap of Rimersburg, Clarion County, later died there. A woman walking her dog on the road found the body about 10:30 a.m. Sunday and notified authorities.

Police Lt. Eric Hermick said investigators are trying to piece together the final hours of Dunlap's life. They also want to know who dumped the woman.

An autopsy later that night did not determine a cause of death. Police are awaiting toxicology results.

Police said no one has yet to be charged in the case and no one is in custody.

Hermick said police are investigating the case as a suspicious death but he did not rule out that Dunlap possibly suffered a drug overdose before she died.

“Obviously,” he said, “this investigation is surrounded by drugs.”

A search of the home where she was staying with four other people later turned up evidence of a methamphetamine lab.

She also was wanted on a bench warrant for absconding from a drug rehabilitation center in Clarion County at the time of her death.

Dunlap had “fresh wounds” on her face, authorities said, including bruises around the left eye.

Hermick said he did not know if she got the injuries during an assault or possibly when she was thrown from a vehicle in back of the dam.

She also had what appeared to be a “defensive wound” on her right hand, police said.

Her body was found over a hillside in grass. Among the clothes she was wearing was a neon pink T-shirt, which caught the eye of the woman walking her dog.

She also wore a pink tank top under the T-shirt and a pair of jean shorts. The body was bare foot.

Police found tire marks leading up to the edge of the hillside.

Investigators do not know how long Dunlap had been dead.

“We're trying to determine when the last time she was seen alive,” Hermick said.

Police said they found no drug evidence at the scene There also was no identification on the body.

Troopers searching the area about 3 p.m. Sunday found Dunlap's black purse in the woods about one-quarter mile from the body. There were also tire marks leading off the road in the area where the purse was found.

The purse, Hermick said, contained medical information and other personal effects that police used to identify the victim.

Police said they have spoken to Dunlap's four roommates, ages 23, 38, 40 and 42, as part of the investigation. They did not elaborate.

Investigators also spoke to Dunlap's father and grandmother who live in Emlenton, Venango County.

The state police Clandestine Lab Response Team was at the victim's home Monday and collected materials for a meth lab. The team found additional related evidence in a pickup truck at the home.

Hermick also said that while searching the house, police found a “clump of hair” that appeared to match the hair on Dunlap's head.
