A Pittsburgh-area man, charged with delivering heroin and cocaine in Butler County, was sentenced to state prison in Butler County Court on Thursday.

Breavett A. Champion, 32, of McKees Rocks, was sentenced to 18 months to three years in a state correctional institution by county Judge Timothy McCune.

Champion previously pleaded guilty to two counts of felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

He was sentenced to 12 to 24 months on the first count, and six months to one year in the second, which McCune ran consecutively. Champion was also ordered to pay $200 in fines and undergo two years of state probation following his release from prison.

The plea left open whether the sentences on each count would run consecutively or concurrently, and McCune said “to make these concurrent would lessen the seriousness of these crimes.”

“It says here that Mr. Champion is a resident of McKees Rocks in Allegheny County,” McCune said. “It is obvious that he was only here in Butler County to sell drugs.”

Champion's attorney, T. Brent McCune, asked Judge McCune to allow Champion to self-report in two weeks to “make living arrangements to allow him when paroled not to be homeless.”

“Mr. Champion is taking responsibility for his actions,” he said. “He is remorseful over the incident ... and he knows he is going to jail.”

Attorney McCune said Champion is not a flight risk, as he has always showed up for court hearings.

Judge McCune denied the request, saying the plea was taken in May, which had allowed Champion “plenty of time to make arrangements.”

Champion was initially charged with the two felony possession charges, as well as felony criminal use of a communications facility, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, loitering and prowling at night and two counts of possession of a controlled substance after an incident at 201 American Ave. on July 4, 2015. The remaining charges were dismissed as part of the plea.

At the time of his arrest, Butler Police said more than 100 bags of heroin were recovered, as well as bags of crack cocaine and marijuana and nearly $1,500 in currency.

Police said an officer noticed a man “frantically jiggling” the front door of a darkened porch at 201 American Ave. While questioning the man, who was identified as Champion, a pat down search found 99 stamp bags of suspected heroin, two bags of suspected crack and a bag of suspected marijuana in his pockets. Additionally, officers said they found him carrying $1,460 in currency, and inside his baseball cap, documents said, police found another 10 bags of suspected heroin.

He was arraigned and held on $100,000 cash bail, which was decreased to $20,000 at the time of his preliminary hearing, and posted on July 30, 2015, and he was released.
