This RV belonging to an Arizona man who was on his way to New England was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon along Route 422 in Franklin Township. No injuries were reported.

FRANKLIN TWP — Rick Dorr was putting gas in his recreational vehicle when he started to see smoke.

He knew he only had a short time to get away from the vehicle.

“I'll tell you, it doesn't take long,” Dorr said.

Dorr was not injured, but the RV burned up on the side of the road around 2 p.m. Saturday on Route 422.

Dorr, of Arizona, said he had been traveling the country and was on his way to New England when his recreational vehicle ran out of gas. He stopped on the side of the road and began to fill it up when it backfired through the carburetor, and the RV caught fire.

Dorr grabbed his laptop, his phone, and unhooked the Jeep which he was hauling from the RV. He got it a safe distance from the RV, and then tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher.

“It was no good,” he said. “I knew then just to get (away).”

Volunteer fire companies from Prospect and Unionville arrived, and put out the fully-involved vehicle within 20 minutes, according to Prospect Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Osborne.

No one was injured, and a stretch of Route 422 was blocked off for about two hours before all the debris was cleared and the RV was towed.

Dorr estimated that he had about $3,000 worth of personal possessions that burned in the fire.

State police also were on scene.
