COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Evans City native Joshua Sutton was named one of the top students at Texas A&M University.
Sutton, a food science and technology major, received the Senior Merit Award given by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to its top 30 graduating seniors out of the college's 1,800 students graduating.
He accepted a job as an associate product development manager for a large Texas-based grocery chain in San Antonio.
Sutton, a U.S. Army veteran, spent six years working on military helicopters. He credits the Army with developing his time management and decision-making skills that he applied to his schooling.
He is a 2007 graduate of Seneca Valley High School and the son of Beth Sutton and Charles Sutton.
———MARS — Mars School District freshman Griffin Miller is a finalist in The Braille Institute's 2017 Braille Challenge.Miller is the son of Jeff and Rachel Miller of Gibsonia and is among the 10 top-scoring contestants in the challenge's Junior Varsity (grades 7-9) category.Miller has earned a spot as a finalist in the contest for the past seven years, placing four times overall and taking first place twice.The event is a two-stage academic competition to motivate blind and visually impaired students to study braille. This year's challenge was held in 46 sites.Miller will go to the final round of the Braille Challenge in June in Los Angeles.
———ERIE — Victoria Beck, a sophomore at Seneca Valley High School, received a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week 2017 at Lycoming College.She was selected for the program based on her motivation to learn as demonstrated through an essay.The event is an economic education program offering students an inside look at the private enterprise system and the way the free market functions.She is the daughter of Sharon Beck of Cranberry Township.—–—ALLIANCE, Ohio — Anna Wilson of Sarver was initiated into the University of Mount Union's chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta. The national scholastic honorary for freshmen recognizes academic excellence.———ALLIANCE, Ohio — Meghan Hess, an exercise science major from Cranberry Township, gave an oral presentation of her research during the University of Mount Union's tenth annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research Day.The presentation was “The Minimum Detectable Change in Senior Fitness Testing Using Opal APDM Sensors.”Hess is a sophomore at Mount Union and a graduate of Seneca Valley High School.———UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — John Carroll University students Rachel Schratz of Butler, Brianna Chlosta of Mars and Mary Flynn of Valencia recently participated in service learning immersion experiences with ministries and community organizations to raise awareness about social justice issues.Students in the program were assigned to one of three locations.Schratz learned from a community of migrant farmers in Immokalee, Fla.Chlosta volunteered in outreach ministry focused on refugees in Louisville, Ky.Flynn participated in work projects with the Oglala Lakota Indian communities at the reservation in Pine Ridge, S.D.
