Butler Middle School students on Tuesday check out the March Madness Book Tournament, which pits some of the most popular books in the school's library against each other.

With the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments starting this week, people around the country are making their picks and debating who will conquer the 64-team bracket.

The students at Butler Middle School this year are getting in on the madness too, but with a twist.

New this year, the school is having a “tournament” of some of the most popular books in the school's library. A bracket including 64 books has been put up outside the school's library and students will vote on each of the matchups. They also filled out a bracket predicting who will win.

Some of the matchups that students have weighed in on so far have included “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” by J.K. Rowling versus “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan and “The Poisoned House” by Michael Ford versus “Pax” by Sara Pennypacker.

The idea behind the tournament was to get the students talking about books and reading, as well as spur more interest, said Natalie Palma, reading specialist.

“This is so exciting, and to see the conversations it is starting ... it's benefiting a greater dialogue,” Palma said.
