BUTLER TWP — It was a not-so-clean getaway for a township man who police say tried to get the bargain of a lifetime on a vacuum.

Michael J. Mitchell, 29, of Butler Township is facing a hearing next month in connection with last week's incident at the Walmart at the Butler Commons shopping plaza.

Butler Township police said that, on Feb. 6, a store security employee noticed a man, later identified as Mitchell, remove the $1.78 price tag from a tumbler.

The defendant then affixed the tag onto a Dyson brand cordless vacuum cleaner, which cost $249, according to police, and headed for a self-checkout register.

He is accused of scanning the tumbler price tag for the vacuum, court documents said, hoping to net a more than $260 savings — counting tax.

The employee stopped Mitchell once he was done using the register.

“Mitchell stated he had the money for the (vacuum),” police noted, “and offered to pay for it after the fact.”

He is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft. A preliminary hearing is scheduled March 21 at the office of District Judge Kevin O'Donnell.
