Earl Shankle Sr., 69, of Chicora suffered moderate head, arm and leg injuries after being hit by a vehicle around 3 p.m. Tuesday. He was crossing the street from his residence at 803 Chicora Road when he was hit by a Volkswagen Passat traveling west. The driver of the car, Madison Weitzel, 19, of Butler was not injured. State Police Trooper Matthew Kephart said Shankle was conscious and alert when he was transported by Butler Ambulance Service to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Chicora Road was limited to one-way traffic for more than an hour following the accident. Shankle was going to check the mail, according to his son, Earl Shankle Jr. In addition to Butler Ambulance Service and state police, Oneida Valley and Chicora fire departments were on the scene.
