ADAMS TWP — Those who rent the pavilions in the Adams Township Community Park can now drink alcohol.

The township supervisors at their Monday night meeting voted unanimously to permit alcohol in the pavilions only.

“If you’re just having a picnic in the park, you still can’t have alcohol,” said supervisors Vice President Tom Franceschina.

He brought the subject up because more and more people have expressed interest in bringing alcohol when renting one of the four pavilions in the 103-acre park on Valencia Road.

Franceschina said that when crews clean up the pavilions after a rental, many times alcohol containers are visible in the trash.

The supervisors reviewed the ordinances of neighboring communities that allow alcohol in their parks before deciding what provisions to include in the new Adams ordinance, Franceschina said.

An additional pricing structure will be added onto the cost of pavilion rentals where alcohol is being used, he said.

Supervisor Russ Ford added that park-goers who are not renting a pavilion cannot bring alcohol to the park. He said the new rule will be strictly enforced.

Supervisor Linda Lees said because people are already bringing alcohol to the pavilions as evidenced when the trash is emptied, she reluctantly seconded the motion to allow alcohol for pavilion rentals.

The board voted unanimously to approve the measure, which will be added to the Website in the near future.

The supervisors stressed that only those who have rented a pavilion and paid the additional fee can have alcohol in the park.

The park’s largest pavilion, the Rotary Pavilion, seats 112 and has electric service, indoor bathrooms, a fireplace and fire ring. It also has a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, stove, gas grill, refrigerator and sink.

The Township Pavilion seats 84 and has electric, a water spigot, indoor bathrooms and a kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, microwave and gas grill, but no stove. It is next to the playground, tee ball fields and sand volleyball court.

The Veteran’s Pavilion seats 55 and has electric, indoor bathrooms and a kitchen. It is close to a ballfield and a small playground.

The smallest shelter, the Kiwanis Pavilion, seats 48 and has electric, a water spigot and a portable toilet. It is near a full-sized baseball field.

The park, which the township got when it bought the Karl Wirth farm, opened in 2000.
