Dad, if I could go back to when you were ill
I would try harder to help you still
You were a fighter who wanted to live
Until your last breath, you did nothing but give
Your life was full of ups and downs
Still you rallied on in your little town
You raised a family and took a wife
All you did was for us all of your life
When you passed, I came to realize that we weren’t the only lives you affected
So many loved you and by you felt protected
Your suffering was your final act of giving
It gave us time to realize that this was not living
You endured so much during your hospital stays
More than I could ever endure today
One evening when things were particularly bad
We know that you saw your mom and dad
The look of joy and expectation on your face we will never forget
I can’t imagine the joy when at heaven’s gate you met
It was time for us to let you go on
Though our heartache for you will never be gone
We look forward to the day when we can be with you
Until then, we will try to live as you did too
We love you dad and always will
Please continue to watch over us until we meet at the “top of the hill”
Thanks for loving all of us
You left a legacy that no other can touch
The greatest compliment I will ever be told
Is when someone says I am just like my father of old.
