Wilbur “Poochie” Wade Smallwood

Wilbur “Poochie” Wade Smallwood, affectionately known as “Uncle Poochie,” 80, of Butler, passed away Tuesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 29, 1936, in Butler, to the late Walter Manley and the late Priscilla Smallwood Allen.

Mr. Smallwood was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked in the machine shop at Armco before retiring in 1999. He then worked at the Office of Personnel Management in Boyers, Butler Ambulance and BART. Wilbur was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora, the Butler Township Auxiliary Police and Dunbar Community Center. He served at the church in the choir and the Asbury Sunday school class and also helped with Meals on Wheels. Wilbur enjoyed hunting, fishing, running, traveling and camping, but especially enjoyed talking with and spending time with his friends and family.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marlene Smallwood Grant and her husband, Duane, and Shelley Cook, both of Butler; one son, Stephen Smallwood of Sacramento, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; two aunts, Opal Merriweather of Brackenridge, and Elizabeth Mays of Butler; five sisters-in-law, Audrey Royster of Atlanta, Ga., Agnes Conway of Boyers, Odessa Conway of Franklin, Hazel Sheffield, of New Brighton, Barbara Conway of Cheswick; his special friend, JoAnn Cutts of Ford City; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Smallwood, who he married July 2, 1960, and who died Dec. 22, 2012.

SMALLWOOD — Friends of Wilbur Wade “Poochie” Smallwood, who died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, will be received from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 200 E. North St., Butler, with the Rev. Eric Park, pastor, officiating.Officers and members of the American Legion Post 117 of Butler, the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora and the VFW Post 249 of Butler, will conduct military honors following the service.Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 E.
