CENTER TWP — The township supervisors Wednesday night voted to use Marcellus shale impact fee money to replace one of its public works trucks.

They voted in favor of spending $170,470 for a new dump truck, which will replace a 2005 truck that will be taken out of service and sold. The new vehicle will be primarily used for salting roads.

The township has more than $314,000 in an account that has accumulated over the past four years since the passage of Act 13 of 2012. That law imposed a fee on unconventional gas wells and allowed the state to distribute the fees to municipalities to be used for certain purchases. Last year the township received about $110,000.

Supervisor Philip Wulff proposed that the truck be paid for using the impact fee money so that local tax money can be spent elsewhere.

The township would like to get on a schedule of replacing one of its six public works trucks every other year, which could potentially be covered by impact fees, depending on how much the township is given.

Supervisor Ron Flatt said he would like to see the township maintain about $100,000 in its impact fee account to cover emergencies or unexpected expenses relating to gas wells.
