U.S. Steel tower goes on sales blockPITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh’s tallest building is up for sale, with a projected price tag that is also sky-high.Real Estate Alert, a trade publication that first reported the listing, said the 64-story, triangular office building could fetch $350 million. The current owner, 601W Cos., a New York holding company, paid $250 million for the building in 2011.The owners have spent $60 million upgrading the building since then and boast two major tenants, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which has corporate offices there, and U.S. Steel.UPMC has a lease for 962,000 square feet of space through 2030 and has its lighted logo atop the building. U.S. Steel is leasing 270,000 square feet through 2028.
Police: Woman beat beyond recognitionRUSSELLTON — Police say a man beat his live-in girlfriend “beyond recognition” by rolling a 250-pound wood-burning stove over her and hitting her with the butt of a BB gun.West Deer police say that happened sometime before a friend brought the battered, bloody woman to their station about 10 p.m. Sunday. She told police that 47-year-old Frank Daniels also pulled out clumps of her hair and choked her before leaving the mobile home they shared.Police found him later Sunday in the woods with the help of police dogs and he was arraigned Monday on attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges.
Music teacher collapses, diesLEECHBURG — Officials say a 53-year-old music teacher has died after he suffered a medical emergency and collapsed while practicing with students at his high school.The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said David Ritzel collapsed in a classroom at Leechburg High School around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday.Leechburg School District officials said the Monroeville man was helping students practice for a performance before the school board that night when he became unresponsive.Superintendent Tiffany Nix praised the students for getting help, although it was ultimately too late for Ritzel. He was pronounced dead at Allegheny Valley Hospital around 3 p.m.
Director says video supports officerPITTSBURGH — The director of the Pittsburgh Police Citizens Review Board says video of the arrest of Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter supports an officer’s version of the events, including that Porter grabbed the officer’s wrists, rendering him defenseless.The Allegheny County district attorney had previously said the video didn’t support the most serious criminal charges against Porter — including aggravated assault for allegedly grabbing Officer Paul Abel’s wrists. A spokesman says the prosecutor is sticking by that assessment.Porter faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 21 on remaining citations for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.
