Proposed board would oversee bike lane plans

PITTSBURGH — An advisory board has been proposed to oversee the creation of bike lanes in the city and field complaints.

A bill introduced by councilman Theresa Kail-Smith would have the board publicly review bike lane plans and draft policies for installing the infrastructure. If approved, the 10-member board would meet at least monthly and report to the City Council at least 120 days before installing a new lane.

Kail-Smith says her office has received a number of complaints about downtown lanes from residents who say they take up space for parking and cause traffic congestion.
