Pregnant woman crashes into pole
CRANBERRY TWP — A pregnant woman from Ellwood City was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after she was involved in a one-car accident on Graham School Road.
The woman, who police did not identify, was far along in her pregnancy. She was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh by Cranberry Township EMS to be evaluated for unknown injuries, said Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, township police spokesman. There were no passengers in the car.
She was conscious and walking around when police arrived, but several passers-by stopped to help her out of the car, he said.
Her Dodge Neon crashed head-first into a utility pole around 11 a.m. on Graham School Road near the intersection with Unionville Road. The car’s airbags deployed and it had heavy front-end damage, including a broken windshield.
The road was restricted to one lane of traffic for about an hour while the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company cleaned up the scene.
The pole was attached to a newer pole that has utility lines on it, but the newer pole was not damaged, Mascellino said. Penn Power was called to evaluate the damage to the old pole, which was broken in half.
Township police are investigating the cause of the accident. There were no witnesses, but several passers-by and neighbors came upon the wreck shortly after it happened, he said.
