SAXONBURG — Sis, Boom, Bah — humbug.

An Allegheny County woman whose bank mistakenly deposited $6,750 into her account made off with most of the money that belonged to the Knoch High School cheerleading booster club, authorities said.

The money, collected during a fundraiser, was intended to benefit breast cancer research, according to Stephanie Mahan, president of the Knoch Cheer Boosters.

Failed attempts by First Commonwealth Bank to recoup the money, lost in the erroneous transaction last fall at its Saxonburg branch, have now led to criminal charges.

Kayla Marie Wade, 24, of Tarentum is wanted on an arrest warrant in the felony case. District Judge Sue Haggerty issued the warrant Friday.

Saxonburg police began their investigation in June after the bank completed its internal investigation,

Police said they learned that Mahan on Nov. 12 was at the bank on West Main Street to make a deposit in the group’s account.

A bank employee, however, deposited the money into the wrong account.

Wade, the unintended beneficiary, wasted little time tapping into her ill-gotten gain, according to court documents.

Investigators found that on Nov. 13 she withdrew $6,000 of the misdirected deposit.

Later that same day, the club’s treasurer discovered the discrepancy in the boosters’ account and notified the bank, which quickly rectified the error on the victims’ behalf.

“The bank found the mistake and they put the money back into our account right away,” Mahan said.

The bank then began trying to get its money back from the suspect. Police subsequently obtained a search warrant for Wade’s bank statements during its investigation.

Both the bank and police made repeated attempts to contact Wade about the deposit error but to no avail.

Saxonburg police Chief Joe Beachem said investigators have had a difficult time finding the defendant.

“In the past year to year and a half,” he said, “she’s had six different addresses. She’s hard to pin down.”

Five of those addresses have been in Butler County, including three in Butler and one each in Saxonburg and Valencia.

Wade is charged with theft of lost or mislaid property, receiving stolen property and theft by deception, all felonies.

A telephone call to the First Commonwealth Bank’s corporate headquarters in Indiana, Pa., was not immediately returned this morning.
