CALLERY — Food, games, old cars and a performance by an “American Idol” singer will be part of the inaugural Callery Community Days.

The event will be from 2 to 10 p.m. July 8 and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 9 on Main Street in front of the Callery Volunteer Fire Department.

Barbara O’Barto and other borough residents have partnered with fire department officials to plan the event.

O’Barto said the borough had a weekend celebration, known as the Callery Street Fair, for decades until seven or eight years ago when the organizers could not recruit enough volunteer help.

“People would come home to go to the street fair so we’re hoping some people will come back home for Community Days,” O’Barto said. “The best thing was getting together. It was a really big deal.”

O’Barto said a fish fry will be at 4 p.m. July 8 at the fire hall, where raffles and an auction will be available. A DJ will play oldie songs as well.

From 6 to 9 p.m. July 9, Emlenton native and 2016 “American Idol” competitor Isaac Cole will perform.

“I think Isaac will bring a lot of people in,” O’Barto said.

Also featured on July 9 will be a children’s tractor pull at 2 p.m. and a car cruise from 1 to 4 p.m. with oldies music at the Crestview Church, O’Barto said.

Food and craft vendors, bounce houses, a children’s fire safety house, games and more will be there both days.

Denny Huffman, a lifelong Callery native and board member with the fire department, said the street fair was held as long as he can remember. He’s glad O’Barto talked to the fire department about putting together a borough event.

“A lot of the longtime residents missed (the street fair) when we stopped having it,” Huffman said. “Now we have people from the community who want to do it and remember the good old days.”

O’Barto and Huffman said all proceeds from Callery Community Days will go to community improvement projects such as adding to the playground at the Crestview Church or upgrading the basketball courts.

“We’ll do some other things around town just to brighten it up,” Huffman said. “It’s a nice quiet community.”
