SRU grows in 2026 despite enrollment pressures
While the enrollment cliff and other issues loom large in higher education, Slippery Rock University is highlighting positive trends and celebrating “historic enrollment growth” in its 2026 freshman class and overall student body.
At SRU’s Sept. 10 “State of the University” address, president Karen Riley described a need to navigate challenges, such as the enrollment cliff and a projected decline in graduating high schoolers and potential college students, due to changing demographics in regions like Western Pennsylvania. The cliff is expected to impact regions like the rural Northeast and Midwest the most.
Population loss could mean lower enrollment and less revenue.
“It’s grim, right? These are strong headwinds. Now, that does not mean we’re going to go like that, but it does paint the realities of what we’re up against,” Riley said Sept. 10.
Despite the challenges, the university has recently touted what it describes as its largest freshman class in its history.
As of mid-September, Slippery Rock University claims to have a total student enrollment of 8,654. This includes 7,077 undergraduate students. SRU also has 1,577 graduate students for the 2026-27 year, the most its ever had. The 2026-27 freshman class includes 1,627 students, up 5% from fall 2025.
“Welcoming the largest first-year class in Slippery Rock University’s history is a powerful sign that more students and families are choosing The Rock as their first-choice destination,” Michael May, vice president for enrollment management, said in a news release. “This growth, as well as our record number of graduate students, reflects the trust families place in SRU and the commitment of our faculty and staff to invest in every student who joins our campus community.”
A demographic breakdown of SRU’s student body revealed by the university shows where its students come from, where the university is growing and where it is not.
The breakdown shows that 58% of SRU students are female. Meanwhile, 23% of students are first-generation college students. It also shows that 11% are “underrepresented students.”
SRU is a predominantly in-state school, as 89% of Slippery Rock University students are from Pennsylvania.
Students from Allegheny County make up a bigger portion of the student body than Butler County. According to the university, 20% of SRU students come from Allegheny compared with 14% from Butler.
The university also claims to have a high percentage of students retained from the previous fall freshman class. According to its data, SRU retained 84% of first-year students from last fall, compared with a national average of 77%.
According to SRU, its three most popular majors include exercise science, 591 students; safety management, 493 students; and early childhood & special education, 398 students.
In a statement to the Eagle, Riley pointed to the university’s efforts to offer programs that are in line with what students want to study, as well as focus on needs in the work force, as a reason for the successful enrollment numbers.
“This growth is a reflection of our commitment to meeting students where they are and preparing them for where they want to go,” Riley said. “We’re paying attention to what students want to study, where the demand for talent is growing and how we can create opportunities that connect their education to their future. That means expanding in-demand programs, strengthening opportunities in high-growth fields and developing new programs that respond to the workforce needs in the region.”
