Two water main breaks — one in Center Township and another in Butler — left as many as 50 people without water, a PA American Water spokesman said Tuesday.

The first break, on Sunset Drive in Center Township, occurred sometime in the early morning and was affecting 15 to 20 customers, said spokesman Melissa Walters.

Crews were on the scene and service was expected to be restored by about 1 p.m. today, she said. Workers from Peoples TWP gas company also were there because of a gas line near the water main, Walters said.

A second line rupture on West Penn Street was affecting 20 to 30 customers, Walters said. Service to those homes was expected to be restored by about 2 p.m. today.

Both lines are 8-inch water mains, Walters said, and the company did not know early today what caused the breaks.
