CALLERY — No one was injured Sunday afternoon when a kitchen stove caught on fire at a home on Main Street.

Two roommates at the single-story rental house were cooking dinner about 4:20 p.m. when flames broke out in the broiler section of the gas stove, said Chief Curt Huffman of the Callery Volunteer Fire Department.

Authorities did not know what caused the stove to apparently malfunction.

“One of the (tenants) hit it with a fire extinguisher,” Huffman said. “A neighbor also came over with another fire extinguisher.”

The quick action put out the fire and contained it to the stove, which was destroyed. No other damage was reported.

The fire was out by the time firefighters from three departments got there.

“The stove was still smoking; that was it,” Huffman said.

Firefighters removed the smoldering appliance and ventilated the house before leaving about 5 p.m.

Assisting the Callery VFD were firefighters from Evans City and the Adams Area Fire District.
