Tuba virtuoso will lead camp, concert

Tuba virtuoso Roger Bobo, who retired in 2001, will serve as an instructor and conductor at a brass festival June 12 to 16 at Slippery Rock University.

SLIPPERY ROCK — If you’re a fan of the music behind movies like “Return of the Jedi,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” you’ll want to attend a festival of brass concert this month at Slippery Rock University.

The event, Roger Bobo Festival of Brass, is a camp for high school, college and professional brass musicians that will feature tuba virtuoso Roger Bobo as a teacher and conductor.

Musicians ranging from age 14 to 70, and from as far away as Spain, will take part in the camp, which is being coordinated by Jonathan Helmick, an assistant professor of music at SRU, and Travis Scott, a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University. The camp will provide instruction in a variety of genres, including classical and jazz, and is a rare opportunity to see Bobo, who retired in 2001 and lives in Tokyo, in action.

“(Roger) is a game changer in the field of brass music,” Helmick said. “He helped transform tuba from being a backup to being a mainstream, soloing instrument.”

The weeklong camp will conclude with a concert in Swope Music Hall at 3 p.m. June 16. Admission to the concert is $3 for students and $5 for adults.
