Intoxicated dad faces charge of endangerment

A 10-year-old boy Wednesday morning made an urgent telephone call: his father was passed out in bed and could not be awakened at home in the 300 block of Second Street in Butler.

The boy also reported that his 9-month-old brother had fallen on the floor and was crying, Butler police said.

The call recipient, the infant’s mother, notified authorities as she headed to the home.

When officers got there, police said, they found the children’s father, 27-year-old David Lee McMaster, out-cold drunk.

He was so intoxicated, according to court documents, that before officers were finally able to rouse him, they had to “forcibly bounce” him on the bed.

Police charged McMaster with child endangerment.

The infant’s mother had left her son with the defendant Tuesday night while she went to work, police said. She picked McMaster because she did not want to pay for a baby sitter.

The next morning, after getting the 10-year-old’s call, she immediately returned to the house. There, she found the boy holding and trying to comfort the crying 9-month-old child.

Police soon showed up and noticed an open case of beer with two or three bottles around it.

“At one point,” documents said, “(the suspect) was forced to turn over to face officers and he rolled back over and pulled the covers up.”

Upon coming to, police said, the defendant showed all the telltale signs of being alcohol-impaired, including glassy eyes and slurred speech.

Police noted they contacted Butler County Children and Youth Services about their findings.
