SRU radio hall to honor inductees

Ceremony slated for homecoming

SLIPPERY ROCK — The first alumni inductees to Slippery Rock University’s newly formed Radio Hall of Fame have been chosen, and the class of 11 will be honored at a ceremony this fall during SRU’s Homecoming weekend.

Jim Aronson, SRU Radio Alumni chairman, called the class some of the best and brightest stars of print, TV and radio media over several generations. They include a CMA Award nominee, an Emmy Award winner, and former students who went on to contribute to or direct some of the biggest radio outlets in the country.

“Each of these (inductees) took what they learned in their classes and at the university radio station to go into the world and make their mark in their given media fields,” Aronson said.

The Class of 2016 inductees are: Mark “Razz” Radziewicz, who is an on-air personality for Philadelphia-based station 925XTU; Chris Coulter, program director at Sunny 107.9/WEAT in West Palm Beach, Fla.; Elliott Wood, program director of Clear Channel Radio; Jeff Brown, faculty general manager of ComRadio at Penn State University; Bruce Russell, a professor emeritus at SRU and the inspiration for The Bruce Russell Scholarship Fund; Tracy Wilson, a former TV show host who won an Emmy for Best Live Special Event Program for coverage of the Special Olympics World Games; John Rozzi, program director of WARO and WXNX in Fort Myers, Fla.; Mike McHugh, a former professor at SRU and retired professor emeritus of Radio TV from Chatham, Ill.; Paul Pattera, of the Scottdale Independent-Observer at West Penn Media; Joe Yesh, editor and news director of WKBN/WYTV of Youngstown, Ohio; and “Chris Kaye” Krupinski, on-air talent for WYRK-FM in Buffalo, N.Y.

The inductees were selected after a three-month process that began earlier this year.

In addition to the hall of fame class, SRU alumni also will be presenting two lifetime achievement awards.

The 2016 Legends Award will be presented to Jim Wentz, the “father of Slippery Rock Radio,” who created SRU’s radio station with his own engineering skills in 1962.

The 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Werner Ullrich, the station’s current chief engineer and primary engineer for more than 30 years, who is responsible for keeping the station operating and running smoothly.
