Train misses officer
CLINTON TWP — A train narrowly missed hitting a trooper’s cruiser Monday night during a high-speed chase, authorities said.
Police said the suspect, Joseph W. Zaborowski, 47, of Winfield Township intentionally stopped his pickup truck just over the railroad tracks near Saxonburg Boulevard and Deer Creek Road in Clinton Township.
“During this time,” according to court documents, “a train was traveling northbound on the tracks and coming directly at the stopped patrol vehicle.”
The pursuing officer, Trooper Jason Frances, with only seconds to spare managed to drive around the truck “to avoid almost being struck by the train.”
Police eventually arrested Zaborowski but not before he resumed the chase and later ran into a wooded area.
District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned the defendant on a felony charge of aggravated assault and misdemeanor charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving under the influence, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
Police also cited him for driving with a suspended license-DUI related, driving without a license, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving and reckless driving.
Zaborowski is in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.
Police initially were called about 9 p.m. for a report of a man stealing tires and rims in the 1100 block of Saxonburg Boulevard. While traveling there, Frances passed the suspect driving the pickup.
Zaborowski and the truck matched the description of the alleged thief and getaway vehicle.
Frances turned around his cruiser and activated the emergency lights and siren in attempting to stop the truck that was northbound on Saxonburg Boulevard. But it did not stop, police said.
Zaborowski is accused of speeding up in his getaway bid, documents said.
Police said Zaborowski crossed the center line several times before crossing the railroad tracks and stopping.
After Frances’ narrow escape, the defendant took off again, this time traveling south along the tracks.
About two-tenths of a mile later, he stopped his truck and ran into the woods. Police would find Zaborowski at a home on Saxonburg Boulevard, less than one-half mile from where he fled into the woods.
Police said Zaborowski appeared intoxicated and reeked of alcohol. He was taken to the barracks for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.10 percent; a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.
