PennDOT to unveil Moraine access plans

Public meeting slated Tuesday

WORTH TWP — The state Department of Transportation next week will unveil its plan for a new access to Moraine State Park’s North Shore.

PennDOT is inviting the public to attend a display of the plans, which will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at DCNR’s Western Regional Office at 195 Park Road, Prospect.

The project will involve the removal of the current access road leading from the westbound lane of Route 422 to North Shore Drive, as well as a bridge that is structurally deficient.

In its place will be a new, two-way access road named Route 4017 and bridge that will allow drivers going west on Route 422 to exit to North Shore Drive, as well as allow drivers on North Shore Drive to enter the westbound lane on Route 422. A stop sign will control traffic entering the highway.

The ramp that allowed drivers to enter Route 422 east from West Park Road will remain. Next to it, a ramp will be built to allow drivers going east on Route 422 to exit onto West Park Road. Drivers going north on Interstate 79 who get off at the Route 422 exit will be able to merge directly onto the off ramp leading to West Park Road, and a traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Route 422 and I-79.

The project is expected to begin construction in the spring of 2017 with a cost of $2.5 million to $5 million, said Deborah Casadei, a PennDOT spokesman.

Park manager Dustin Drew said the project has generated excitement among park officials, who are always looking for ways to increase access to Moraine. They think the access ramp will do much to highlight the already-popular facilities at the North Shore destination.

“Obviously, it’s going to make access to the North Shore, which has some of our most popular facilities, much more convenient,” Drew said. “It has the potential to increase attendance and make the park more accessible to people coming from the major interstates.”

The meeting Tuesday will have information on the project’s schedule, design and traffic control during construction.

PennDOT representatives and design consultants will be available to answer questions.

The department is asking anyone with knowledge of historic resources in the project area or with comments on potential impacts to historic resources to attend this meeting.
