Butler native wins Women’s Press Club award

PITTSBURGH — Jessica Federkeil of Butler won the first prize award in the Women’s Press Club scholarship competition.

She and other students submitted feature writing for this Pittsburgh competition.

Feder-keil is a journalism major at Point Park University. She is in the school’s honors program and is an apprentice with Point Park News Service. She will be a Web/news intern this summer with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Federkeil is a graduate of Knoch High School and the daughter of Anita Federkeil.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Jonathan Elm of Valencia was initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Elm is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at Florida Institute of Technology.

Forrest Dickey and Jakub Nelson, both students at the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School, were among the top winners at the statewide competition for Skills USA in Hershey.

Forrest won second place in the computer maintenance competition. He is a senior from Moniteau High School and is in the computer networking and telecommunications course at the vo-tech.

Jakub won third place in the sheet metal competition. He is a senior from Knoch High School and is in the HVAC course at the vo-tech.

The SkillsUSA competitions showcase the best career and technical education students in the nation.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Amy Achenbach of Butler and Ryan Kissinger of Valencia were acknowledged at the University of Mount Union’s Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.

Achenbach, a senior French history major, was honored with The Rufus Ruth Romance Language Prize and The Fishel History Prize.

Kissinger, a senior geology major, was honored with The Geology Award.

The students were recognized for excelling academically, displaying excellent leadership skills and showing dedication to the university and community through outstanding community service initiatives.

WASHINGTON — Sabrina Edwards of Mars accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

She was invited to join based on her grade point average and class standing.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second-year college students.

ATLANTA — Gabrielle Barton of Butler was selected to become a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

She was recognized for demonstrating outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment.

Barton is a senior at Knoch High School and the daughter of Paul and Lori Hovanec of Butler. She plans to attend Hollins University in Roanoke, Va., to study film and creative writing.
