Here's look at winning delegates

A one-time congressman, a businesswoman and a manufacturer were among the delegates from the 3rd Congressional District elected in Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary to attend the Republican National Convention.

The typically overlooked race took on more importance this year since Pennsylvania's delegates will have more influence than usual because the presidential races on both sides remain undecided.

Under Pennsylvania Republican rules, the three delegates elected in each of the state's 18 congressional districts are unbound, or unpledged, meaning they can vote to nominate any candidate for president that they want.

Democratic voters, on the other hand, elect pledged delegates to the party's national convention. Those delegates are required to vote for whichever candidate they have committed to support as indicated on the primary ballot.

In the 3rd District, according to unofficial results, former U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie was the top Republican vote-getter among 11 candidates. He received 39,971 votes.

Lynne Ryan of New Castle, who owns a topsoil business with her husband, was second with 28,626 votes.

In third was Robert Yates of Millcreek Township, Erie County, who has worked in the small business/manufacturing sector and in education. He got 25,995 votes.

The 3rd District covers all of Butler, Armstrong and Mercer counties, all of Crawford County except Titusville, and parts of Clarion, Erie and Lawrence counties.

Pennsylvania's GOP is the only party in any primary state that elects delegates with no indication of a candidate preference.

While most candidates, like English, remained uncommitted to any specific presidential hopeful, Ryan supported Trump and Yates backed U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, according to Republican officials.

The other GOP delegate candidates and their unofficial votes tallies, were as follows:

Michele Mustello of Donegal Township, recorder of deeds in Butler County, 23,176; Jim Keffalas of Butler Township, a real estate business owner, 21,831; state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe of Cranberry Township, 20,763; state Rep. Brian Ellis of Butler Township, 20,598.

Dan Vete of Seven Fields, a small businessman, 18,002; Michael Baker of East Franklin Township, Armstrong County, a business executive at Baker Gas Co., 15,643; Louis Aliota, of Erie, a licensed registered pharmacist 10,653; and Gale Measel of Neshannock Township, Lawrence County, owner of a construction company, 9,454.

In Butler County, not surprisingly, the top three vote-getters were all from their home county.

The candidates' vote totals here are: Metcalfe, 12,692; Ellis, 11,460; Mustello, 10,769, English, 10,416; Keffalas, 10,037; Ryan, 9,761; Vete, 6,742; Yates, 5,947; Aliota, 3,504; Baker, 3,174; and Measel, 1,294.

Democratic voters in the 3rd District elected six delegates — the top three men and top three women vote-getters. There were 11 candidates running.

Here are the candidates, the counties where they live, to whom they are committed — either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders — and their vote totals districtwide:

Kathy Dahlkemper, Erie, Clinton, 38,893; Bill Cole, Erie, Clinton, 32,387; Ron DiNicola, Erie, Clinton, 32,161; Lorraine Dolan, Erie, Clinton, 31,874; Cindy Purvis, Erie, Sanders, 31,807; Valerie Kean Staab, Crawford, Clinton, 30,692; Andre Horton, Erie, Clinton, 29,618; Wayne Hanson, Crawford, Sanders, 28,748; Veronica Rexford, Erie, Sanders, 28,556; Kirk Atwood, Armstrong, Sanders, 26,867; and Lou Vergari, Armstrong, Sanders, 25.778.

In Butler County, vote totals were: Dahlkemper, 8,833; Dolan, 7,759; Purvis, 7,662; Cole, 7,648; Kean Staab, 7,464; DiNicola, 7,087; Hanson, 7,009: Rexford, 6,805; Horton, 6,596; Atwood, 6,463; and Vergari, 6,221.
