Cats blamed for setting off alarm

LANCASTER TWP — A smoke alarm at a residence on Camp Run Road may have been caused by “mischievous” felines, firefighters said.

Around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, firefighters from Harmony Fire District and the Portersville Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the residence after the alarm was upgraded to “full structural.”

When they entered the home, firefighters said they didn’t find the owners or a blaze, but heavy smoke that may have been caused by a bottle of creamer that exploded on a hot stove top that cats may have turned on by stepping on the controls, said Harmony Fire District Chief Scott Garing.

He said investigators also think the cats may have knocked over the creamer bottle on top of the burner.

“It (bottle) exploded and filled the house with smoke,” Garing said.

Firefighters turned off the stove and ventilated the home.

“The events were definitely weird,” Garing said. “But you could tell since there was cat hair on the cook top. They had seven cats in the house.”
