Worker accused of lying to get coverage for injury
EVANS CITY — An employee of a company in the borough is accused of lying about a workplace injury to get an $800 hospital bill covered.
Steven Vlassich, 28, of Beaver Falls was charged Monday with felony workers’ compensation insurance fraud and misdemeanor theft by deception. He is free on $5,000 bail.
Charges were filed by the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Vlassich, a laborer with EverDry Waterproofing, on Nov. 13, 2014, visited the emergency room at Butler Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for an injury to his chest that he said occurred at work two days earlier, according to court records. His hospital bill was $792 and he missed eight days of work.
After workers’ compensation forms had been filed, insurance adjusters interviewed other employees and heard conflicting stories about when and where Vlassich was injured.
In an interview with investigators, Vlassich allegedly admitted to injuring himself at home and did not have insurance to cover the medical bills, so he provided false information to the hospital employees, who filed his forms.
