Warrant issued for alleged Butler gunman

Butler police are seeking a suspect accused of firing a gun after trying to break into a home on Sumner Avenue early Tuesday morning.

District Judge William Fullerton on Wednesday issued a felony arrest warrant for 29-year-old Trimayne K. Franklin, who has no known address.

Franklin allegedly showed up about 5 a.m. at Percy Guilky’s home on Sumner Avenue and started pounding on the front door, police said.

The noise awakened Guilky, who recognized the suspect’s voice yelling to let him in or he was “going to shoot the house up,” according to court documents.

The alleged victim refused, and the intruder then forced open a locked screen door. Moments later, Guilky heard a gunshot.

Guilky’s upstairs neighbors told police they heard the gunfire, too. Before the shot, they also heard a man yelling.

The neighbors looked out the window, police said, and saw a black man dressed in black clothing standing in front of the house and a white man in blue jeans nearby.

Both men ran toward Morton Avenue following the gunshot. Franklin, who is black, got away, documents said.

But police soon caught William Claypool, 23, of Slippery Rock, who is white. He was found about 5:30 a.m. trying to hide under a porch.

Claypool told investigators he had agreed to meet Franklin near Guilky’s home that morning, police said. He remained at the bottom of the steps while Franklin went to the door and banged on the victim’s door.

“He then observed Franklin pull out a handgun from an unknown location and fire a round at the front porch steps area,” according to a police affidavit.

He said they ran away together before splitting up.

Claypool faces a misdemeanor charge of loitering and prowling at night.

Police charged Franklin with trespass and terroristic threats, both felonies, and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor.

The Butler police warrant is not the only one out for Franklin. For nearly four years, Adams Township police have been looking for the suspect in connection with a felony drug case.

Police obtained their arrest warrant in April 2012 stemming from a traffic stop at Route 228 and Brickyard Road.

Following the stop, police impounded the friend’s car that Franklin was driving, with a suspended license and with a suspended license plate.

The suspect was allowed to leave. Later, police got a search warrant for the vehicle. The search turned up crack cocaine around the driver’s seat and in a high-top basketball shoe in the trunk.

Police in the warrant charged Franklin with felony and misdemeanor drug possession.

The defendant, meanwhile, is wanted on a bench warrant issued in July 2012 after he failed to appear in Butler County Court for a probation violation in connection with a conviction in a 2010 felony drug case.
