Jackson supervisors discuss road paving, repair projects

JACKSON TWP — Three township roads were discussed for repaving and repair this year.

Supervisors discussed potential paving plans for parts of Fanker Road, Gudekunst Road and Gregg Drive.

“We have a budget of around $300,000,” township manager Chris Rearick said at Monday’s meeting. “We can make these projects work.”

Rearick said the township is working toward a pavement overlay program where asphalt can be laid on top of existing pavement. He said the advantage of the program is that costs can be more easily predictable.

Ben Gilberti, a representative with Herbert, Rowland and Grubic, said the overlay paving method is more efficient.

“It’s less pavement, so it’s shorter backup. It’s a typical repair for these types of roads with base repairs,” Gilberti said. “It’s a good opportunity for the township road crew to do some excavation and do some base repair.”

Rearick said the township saved between $50,000 and $60,000 this winter due to not using as much salt supplies as in previous years.

He also said revenues are up in the township general fund.

About $200,000 has been appropriated for its operating reserve. Rearick said not all of that money should be used for the roads project, but some could be.

The township also will try to further save money by using its own vehicles to pave the roads.

Supervisors will not meet Thursday night.
