Simply dominant

Breen nets 36 as CWNC rolls to 62-45 PIAA win

ALLEGHENY TWP — Ashley Robbins helped get it started. Sam Breen got it finished.

Robbins, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s sophomore point guard, sank two treys during a dominant first quarter. Junior forward Breen scored 23 consecutive points for the Trojanettes during the middle of the game.

It all added up to a runaway 62-45 PIAA Class A girls basketball quarterfinal win over Bishop Carroll Saturday afternoon at Kiski Area High School.

The win, CWNC’s 15th in 16 games, sends the Trojanettes (26-3) into the semifinal round Tuesday night against Bishop Guilfoyle (22-6), a 48-34 winner over Kennedy Catholic on Saturday.

“We’re one win away from Hershey and I think we can get there,” Breen said. “We just have to keep playing as a team.”

While Breen scored 36 of her team’s 62 points Saturday, the Trojanettes definitely played as a team.

They sank three treys in the first quarter, took a 13-3 lead in the first three and a half minutes and led 23-9 by quarter’s end.

“We ran into a buzz-saw at the start of this game,” Bishop Carroll coach Bob Gongloff said. “They came out fired up, as hot as a firecracker.”

Breen said there was a reason for that.

“At our boys game (against Bishop Carroll), kids sitting behind us in the stands kept saying how we were going to meet our match against Bishop Carroll, how they were going to take us down,” Breen said.

“That motivated us. Nobody believed we were going to win today except our parents and us. We went out there with something to prove.”

Trojanettes coach Molly Rottmann marveled at her team’s passing Saturday.

“We were patient and worked the ball in,” she said. “Sam scores a lot of points every night, but the other girls aren’t jealous at all. They find a way to get her the ball.

“Ashley’s 3-pointers were big early and gave her confidence. She handles the ball for us 90 percent of the time.

“I knew what our girls heard in the stands that night,” Rottmann added, smiling. “We used that. You use anything to gain a little edge.”

A Dani Short lay-up gave CWNC a 25-9 lead with 7:40 left in the first half. Breen then scored the Trojanettes’ next 23 points — two off offensive rebounds, seven lay-ups, one jumper and three free throws.

The Trojanettes earned their biggest lead of the night — 41-16 early in the third quarter — during Breen’s run.

“I had no idea that was going on,” Breen said of the streak. “I don’t know how some of those shots were going in.”

Breen had 13 rebounds, four assists and three rebounds to go with her 36 points. The Huskies (24-5) were sagging three defenders on her down low at times, but could not stop her.

“My hat is off to that girl,” Gongloff said. “She’s a tremendous ballplayer. I wish her luck in the future.”

Short had eight rebounds for the Trojanettes, Abby Goetz seven points and three assists.

Jourdan Williams led Bishop Carroll with 15 points. Alyssa Martinazzi had nine points and Courtney Link five rebounds. The Huskies were out-boarded, 32-23.

Bishop Carroll went on a run in the second half — pulling within 56-45 with four minutes left — but got no closer.

“We never really felt threatened at that point or felt the lead was in danger,” Breen said. “They started getting more rebounds than we did and finished some plays.”

Bishop Carroll trailed by 18 at halftime against Forest Hills this season — the only other time all year it was throttled in the first half of a game.

“We came back in the second half and only lost by two,” Gongloff recalled. “I thought we outplayed them in the second half tonight. But we were down by too much.”

“I expected this to be a down-to-the wire game,” Rottmann said. “We came out focused and ready. These girls showed what they are capable of doing.”
