Seneca looks at updating pool
JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley School District officials are looking at options for expanding and updating the district’s swimming pool.
Built 51 years ago in the intermediate high school, the pool has never been renovated, only repaired and maintained, said Linda Andreassi, district communications director.
The district does not have a timeline for when any work would be done, she said.
The school board is considering several options for redoing the pool in the next couple of years, which would include making it bigger. It is 25 yards long, has six lanes and an integral diving well.
An eight-lane, 25-yard pool would cost an estimated $5 million.
Include a diving well and the price goes to $7.9 million. If the diving well is separate from pool, the cost bumps to $8.3 million, Andreassi said.
The pool is used by physical education classes where swimming and water safety are taught.
It also is used by clubs and teams outside of school hours. The high school has boys and girls swimming teams, which includes divers.
The Seneca Valley Swim Club, which has 107 members, pays the district $25,000 each year in rental fees to use the pool. It uses the pool for an estimated 510 hours each year.
It is also used for scuba training courses, youth swimming lessons and police, firefighter and medic trainings.
