Firefighters continue to battle blaze hours after it started

Firefighters continue to battle a fire into the night at the Worsley’s building on Main Street.

It started in an apartment on the third floor about 3:45 p.m.

The fire continues to burn even as dozens of firefighters pour water on it.

Paige Taggart, who lives in one of the apartments, was entering her living room when she saw her couch on fire, said her fiancé Jake Byers.

Taggart, who was alone at the time, was able to flee the building uninjured, as were all of the other renters.

Byers speculated that the cause of the fire was an electric heater next to the couch.

“If it happened by the couch, it had to be our heater,” he said.

Firefighters arrived at 159 N. Main St., and it wasn’t long before the Butler Fire Department and a number of other departments all were working to attack the fire.

However, about 6:30 p.m. Butler Mayor Tom Donaldson indicated that the damage to the building was massive.

“I’d say it’s damaged beyond salvation,” he said.

The Red Cross is aiding the those who lost their housing, providing them food, clothing and shelter.

Worsley’s, a former Butler mainstay business, closed in 2014 after 87 years of operation.
