Artists, writers win Gold KeysJACKSON TWP — Eleven Seneca Valley students won Gold Keys in the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Competition of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. They will visit New York City this month where national medalists will be announced.The competition attracted more than 500 entries from students grades seven to 12 in Western Pennsylvania.Gold Key winners included Alex Lecce (six), Dennis Adams, Micah Schirra, Cara Mastrostefano, Rhea Kudtarkar, Ciarra Hegadorn, Julia Milo, Megan Piotrowski, Kelly Campbell, Sophia Becker and Zofia Chrzanowska.Two seniors received additional awards in art. Alex Lecce received an Emma Munson Memorial Scholarship for his portfolios and Cara Mastrostefano won a Pittsburgh Arts Region Special Recognition Award.Silver Key winners were Dennis Adams (three), Cara Mastrostefano (six), Carly Weigel, Riley Bell, Bailey Geyer (two), Kelly Campbell (two), Shelby Crispin, Micah Schirra, Sarah Foster (two), Caitlin DeVries, Kristen O'Brien, Chloe Young, Brenna Stubenbort, Taylor Wright, Lucy Geronime, Sydney Long, Zofia Chrzanowska and Olivia English (two).Seneca Valley High School students who received Honorable Mentions for their entries included Sarah Foster, Shelby Crispin, Dennis Adams, Jared Nocera, Taylor Wright, Serenity Sproat, James Faber, Sarah Foley, Lucy Geronime (four), Hung Ha (two), Joanna Valentas, Erin Piotrowski, Lindsey Ocheltree and Isabella Moosa.
SV students earn scholarshipsCRANBERRY TWP — Seneca Valley High School senior Hannah Hale, junior Nate Konieczka and freshman David Grimm received scholarships from Cranberry Township VFW Post 879.The Seneca Valley students were among the 40,000 nationwide to receive scholarships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars “Voice of Democracy” program.Students competed by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme was “My Vision for America.”The program has offered scholarships to American students since 1947.———NEW WILMINGTON — The Westminster College Symphony Orchestra recently performed works of Chabrier, Bizet and Shostakovich in its winter concert.The following area musicians are members of the orchestra: Keely Mohn, Zoey Povlick and Zachary Woessner of Butler; Krystina Rothhaar of Callery; Sean Evanick of Ellwood City; David McCollough of Fenelton; Bradley Gibbons of Prospect; and Samantha Bowman of Slippery Rock.———FINDLAY, Ohio — Kiley Clinton of Cabot received the Ritz Memorial Scholarship and Emerson D. and Laura E. Pelton Scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year. They are endowed scholarships at the University of Findlay in Ohio.———YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Linda Moore of Harrisville, was inducted into the Youngstown State University chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society. Moore is a business student at YSU.Golden Key is the world's largest collegiate honor society. Membership is based on academic achievements.———ASHLAND, Ohio — Laurena Shick of Zelienople will be inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society chapter at Ashland University.Shick is majoring in fashion merchandise. She is a 2015 graduate of Slippery Rock High School.Alpha Lambda Delta recognizes first-year students who have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in their first or first two semesters.
Maizee Zaccone was named a 2016 New Century Scholar by achieving the state's highest score in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition.She is an English major at Butler County Community College and has a 3.94 GPA.Zaccone is a 2014 graduate of Butler High School and a recipient of the BC3 President's Scholarship Award. She is also the student editor of “Facets,” BC3's art and literary magazine.Students were nominated from more than 1,000 community colleges for recognition. Judges considered grades, leadership, activities and how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.Sponsors of the New Century Scholars Program include The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.
