Pirating movies is alleged
PITTSBURGH — A Penn Township man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of pirating movies during his arraignment.
Brian D. Ridley, 38, of Winters Road was trying to audio tape movies at a drive-in and was indicted by a federal grand jury, according to paperwork with the U.S. Attorney General on Feb. 16.
Ridley tried to audio tape portions of “Sex Tape,” “Planes: Fire and Rescue,” and “The Purge” at the Dependable Drive-In in Coraopolis.
This was part of a conspiracy in which other people would videotape movies in theaters, and others would record the audio of those same movies at drive-in theaters. The audio and video would then be synced together and be uploaded to the Internet for others to download.
This took place from August 2011 to July 2014.
Ridley pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of unauthorized recording of motion pictures.
He was released on $10,000 unsecured bond, but no other court dates are set.
Ridley’s attorney, Michael Novara with the Federal Public Defender Office in Pittsburgh, was not immediately available for a comment.
