SR man, 21, held in jail in assault, kidnap case
GROVE CITY — A Slippery Rock man is jailed on charges stemming from an alleged weekend assault during which another man was run over by a sport utility vehicle.
Grove City police said Moises C. Ferreira, 21, was riding in a car on West Popular Street about 2:50 p.m. Saturday when he spotted the alleged victim, 32-year-old Christopher Basham.
Ferreira got out of the car and approached Basham, punching him and attempting to drag the alleged victim into the vehicle, said police Chief Dean Osborne.
Moments later, the driver took off, running over Basham’s right foot in the getaway. Ferreira was already in the vehicle and also got away.
Osborne said the defendant and victim are acquaintances but he did not know what motivated the alleged assault.
Police began their investigation after being called Monday afternoon to the Grove City Medical Center, where Basham showed up with injuries to his foot and face. A medical helicopter later flew him to a Pittsburgh hospital for further treatment.
His condition and the extent of the injuries were not available.
State police on Monday arrested Ferreira in Slippery Rock.
District Judge Neil McEwen arraigned the defendant on charges of aggravated assault, attempted kidnapping and simple assault. He was placed in the Mercer County Jail on $100,000 bail following arraignment.
A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday.
Osborne said the investigation continues and he did not rule out that others could be charged.
