S. Butler to seek line of credit

Amount remains undetermined

JEFFERSON TWP — The South Butler School Board on Wednesday night approved applying for a line of credit for an undetermined amount.

Paul Slomer, director of business affairs for the district, said the amount has yet to be decided and applications will be filed with multiple banks.

Slomer said that while the district has enough money to continue operating through May, the state budget impasse has contributed to the need for a contingency line of credit.

Superintendent David Zupsic told the board that the district has cut non-essential spending including supply purchases and employees attending conferences. The district also has plans to deter capital projects already are budgeted and scheduled on an as-needed basis.

All of this is done to ensure the education of students, Zupsic said.

“Although the situation is unprecedented and could not have been anticipated, the board and the administration are working to ensure that students, programs and activities are not affected and that students continue to receive the high levels of instruction and attention that are the standards of this district,” he said.

Regarding other financial issues, the board will vote March 9 on the proposed Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School’s budget for the 2016-17 school year. South Butler’s portion of the $5 million budget is $446,000.

It will vote on the proposed Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV’s 2016-17 operating budget. That budget is $4 million, with South Butler’s share of $38,000.
