Convenience store robbed at gunpoint

Police look for suspect

EMLENTON — State police are on the hunt for a gunman who wore an apparent Halloween-type get-up to hold up a Main Street convenience store Tuesday night.

“He had some kind of a mask on and a black cape,” police Cpl. Iian Elliott said this morning.

The unknown suspect, who is believed to be in his 20s, made off with about $200 in currency from the Uni-Mart, police said. No one was hurt.

The robber, described as being 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall, walked into the store about 9:30 p.m.

“The clerk was mopping up when the suspect came in,” Elliott said. “He pointed a handgun at (the clerk) and said, ‘Give me your money.’”

The weapon was described as a black, semi-automatic pistol.

“(The clerk) believed it was a real gun,” Elliott said.

There was only one employee, a man, working at the time and no customers, a store worker, who did not want to give her name, said this morning. The store on weekdays closes at midnight.

The clerk complied with the robber’s demand and turned over the money, police said. The man fled on foot. A getaway car was not seen.

The crook’s direction in leaving the store, which sits across the street from the Emlenton fire hall, suggested to police that he could be a resident.

“He ran to his right,” Elliott noted. That route would take him into town.

A turn to the left would have quickly led him out of town by way of the Emlenton Bridge.

The clerk apparently was unable to offer a detailed description of the robber’s disguise, which included gloves.

“He couldn’t describe the mask well,” Elliott said. “He said it was gray or black.”

And the possible black cape, investigators acknowledged, could have actually been a full-length poncho. Police noted it was raining heavily Tuesday night.

The store is equipped with a video surveillance system but it was not immediately known if cameras captured any images that could aid police in identifying the suspect.

Police said they planned to examine the video today as part of their ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at the Franklin station at 814-676-6596.
