Zelie council mulls Peach, Pine changes

Streets could become 1-way

ZELIENOPLE — A possible one-way designation for Peach Street or Pine Street was discussed Monday night by borough council.

Council members and officials previously considered the designation, citing a recent traffic study.

Drivers turning from West Beaver Street, which is Route 68, onto Pine Street are faced with a blind spot on their right side.

Council members and borough officials said the blind spot may confuse drivers turning from Peach Street onto West Beaver Street.

“You’re looking to your left and there really isn’t adequate sight distance to be able to pull out onto Pine Street to be able to turn onto Route 68,” borough engineer Tom Thompson said. “Making Peach Street one-way heading toward the northeast direction (to Hazel Street) solves that problem.”

Thompson also explained details for giving Pine Street a one-way designation going east.

Borough officials said both sides of Pine Street by St. Gregory Catholic Church are taken up by parked vehicles.

“Some residents have complained about ... what’s left isn’t wide enough for two cars,” Thompson said.

Thompson said while no major incidents have been reported, isolated minor incidents with drivers traveling on both sides of the street have been.

“We would hope that somebody would pull over while someone else goes, but that doesn’t always happen,” he said.

Thompson also said school buses travel east on Pine Street, so the one-way designation would not be a problem.

“Although Peach Street would technically be a two-way, chances are everybody would be heading north,” he said.

Mayor Tom Oliverio said he prefers Peach Street being a one-way road.

“What happens there is from Route 68, you’re going onto Pine Street and all of a sudden somebody is pulling out on Peach Street,” he said. “That’s a problem I’ve ran into a couple times there.”

Council President Allen Bayer said Pine Street is “a mess” and “very dangerous.”

Restrictive parking for Pine Street was another idea brought up.

However borough manager Don Pepe said restrictive parking may cause problems with churchgoers as well as with events there.

“Either way, we need to get public comment on this,” Pepe said.

Council tabled the vote to advertise the change in ordinance for the designation.
