Geist extends state shot put record

Jordan Geist and Emily Horstman had themselves quite a day at Saturday's Tri-State Track Coaches Association Indoor Championships, held at Edinboro University.

Geist, a junior at Knoch, broke his own school and state record in the boys' shot put with a first-place heave of 72 feet, nine and one-half inch. That effort is also tops in the nation among juniors and sends Geist to the state indoor championship meet, scheduled for next Sunday at Penn State University.

A senior at Butler, Horstman broke the school record in the girls' 60 and 200-meter dashes with times of 7.85 and 25.77 seconds, respectively, earning first and second place.

Horstman will compete at states in the 60 and 200 dashes as well as the 800 and 1,600 relays. She teamed with Alexis Leech, Odile Enslen and Shana Hoy in the 800 with a first-place time of 1:47.69. The same quartet finished third in the 1,600 run with a school-record time of 4:08.21.

On the boys' side, Knoch senior Brennan McTighe placed second in the shot put and will throw at Penn State after an effort of 54-3.
