Southern Butler County gets snow, north is in the clear

The southern and central parts of Butler County got a relatively small amount of snow from the winter storm that is pounding the eastern seaboard.

Cranberry Township got at least 3 inches by this morning, but the main roads were clear by 7:30 a.m. Buffalo Township got 2 to 3 inches, and the roads were in better shape by about 7 a.m.

In Middlesex Township about a mile from the Allegheny/Butler county line, about 2 inches was reported, and Route 8 was slushy. Further north on Route 8 in Penn Township, the highway was clearer with about an inch of snow on the ground.

The further north in the county, the snow sharply dropped off.

In Butler Township near Armco Hill, Route 8 was wet with less than an inch of snow. In Slippery Rock, only a dusting of snow was reported.

Although the snow was annoying, it was not anywhere near as bad as it was further south in the Pittsburgh region.

In Latrobe, 12 inches had fallen by this morning, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. In Flatwood, Fayette County, 19 inches had fallen.

In Terra Alta, W.Va., 28 inches had fallen.

“All you have to do is look south and it looks good (up here),” said NWS meteorologist Lee Hendricks.

After a small amount of snow predicted for this morning, Butler should be in the clear, Hendricks said.
